As a result of Hurricane Katrina, eight southwest Alabama counties were designated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to qualify for grant assistance to aid in establishing and enhancing mosquito abatement programs.
Clarke County was one of the counties selected for this assistance. The grant was secured from the CDC through the Alabama Department of Public Health's Epidemiology Division.
The Clarke County Commission as well as the cities of Fulton, Grove Hill, Jackson and Thomasville will be receiving a grant to purchase needed equipment and chemicals to enhance existing mosquito control programs and to help establish a primary mosquito control program for Clarke County.
The Clarke County Health Department will provide assistance to these programs by providing a seminar on the operation and use of the equipment as well as effective techniques in mosquito control.
This grant was made possible through the cooperative efforts of the federal, state, area and local agencies.
Also receiving grant funding for mosquito abatement activities were Baldwin, Choctaw, Escambia, Marengo, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties and the cities of Butler, Demopolis, Fulton, Gilbertown, Linden and McIntosh.
A local seminar will be announced in March 2008.
