'Parents Night' to inform about job opportunities
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

A Clarke/Washington County "Parents Night" program will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24 at Jackson High School to highlight job opportunities in area industries.

The event is intended to educate parents on ways to prepare their children for future employment opportunities. There will be approximately 13 information booths with representatives.

Bradley Byrne of Fairhope, chancellor of the two-year college system in Alabama, will be the guest speaker. He was appointed by the Alabama State Board of Education in May of 2007 to serve in the position.

In his role as Chancellor, Byrne also serves as Chairman of the State Workforce Planning Council. In that role he oversees all of Alabama's workforce development efforts.

There will also be representatives on hand from Alabama Southern and Bishop State Community Colleges to answer questions about their technical job training programs.

There will be door prizes given away including I-Pods and accessories, computer laptops and personal printers.

The Thursday event is sponsored by Boise, Ciba, Alabama Power, Olin, New Era, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, the Clarke- Washington Electric Membership Corporation, Gulf Lumber-Jackson, Alabama Southern and Bishop State.
