Cameras to watch over 911 dispatchers
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Clarke County Commission approved Tuesday the purchase of video surveillance cameras for the county E-911 Center.

All of the commissioners approved the purchase except for Rhondel Rhone.

The low bid price for four cameras, a digital video recorder (DVR), installation and training was $1,249.99 from the Record and Sound Shop of Jackson, said E-911 Coordinator Becky Neugent.

There had been recent complaints by officials with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department that specific E- 911 dispatchers had not been at their posts at crucial times. Neugent had asked for the video cameras at the last E-911 Board meeting.

"I don't think cameras are the way to solve the problem," Rhone said Tuesday. He preferred Neugent work with each employee individually. The commissioner said Neugent needs to "face that problem head-on," and that the money spent on the cameras "could be spent better elsewhere."

E-911 already has four cameras which allow personnel to see who is seeking access to the center.

In other action from Tuesday's meeting, the commission did not take action on a request by Gilly Parden Durell to change the name of Avalon Lane to Parden Cemetery Road.

There are no residents living on the road, which is located three miles north of Coffeeville. Landowners had signed a petition in favor of the name change, Neugent said. Durrell was also willing to pay for the road sign.

The E-911 board had voted in 2002 to stop changing road names, said Commissioner Paul Bradford. The board voted to stop after approximately 30 road names were changed that year, Neugent said. Notices were run at the time for several weeks for people to change road names.

Commissioner Rhone said if you change this one, other people will ask for other road name changes.

A motion by Commissioner Patricia DuBose to change the road name died due to the lack of a second.

• The Tuesday commission meeting was the last for Joe Hunt as Commission Chairman. Commissioner DuBose will take over that position with the Feb. 11 work session.
