Jackson child treated for ingesting meth; police investigating
By Evan Carden Special to The Democrat

A two-year-old child was treated at Jackson Medical Center (JMC), Tuesday, after ingesting what is believed to have been methamphetamine.

According to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge, the toddler, reportedly Hispanic, was taken to the hospital by its mother shortly after 1 p.m., Jan. 29. "We received a call from JMC around 1:20 p.m., stating that they believed they had a young child who had ingested methamphetamine," said Burge.

He said investigation into the matter revealed that the mother had left the baby with her stepfather while she went to a doctor's appointment. Shortly after returning home, she said her son exited her mother and stepfather's bedroom carrying a plastic bag with a white powdery substance. "She stated he began acting strangely then began having what appeared to be a seizure."

Officers Jonathan Downey and Carey Slayton responded to the hospital where they used a field test kit to test the substance in the bag. Burge said the substance tested positive, confirming it was methamphetamine.

The child was admitted to JMC overnight and had improved by Wednesday morning, according to Chief Burge.

No arrests have been made and the case remains under investigation by Jackson Police with assistance from the Clarke County Department of Human Resources .
