Community Calendar The Clarke County Board of Education will have a special meeting Thursday, (today), Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. Items to be discussed include the superintendent's report, bids, academic/athletic complex at Jackson High School and technology-servers. Coffee with Sylvia The Grove Hill Area Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Business Center, Inc. will host a women business and entrepreneurs workshop Thursday, (today), Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. the workshop titled "Coffee with Sylvia" will be conducted by Sylvia Browder and is free to anyone who would like to attend. The discussion for the workshop will be Tipping the Scale of Work - Life Balance in your favor: Five Timely Tips. The workshop will be held at the Helms house next to the Clarke County Museum and reservations are suggested. Free concert in Monroeville The world-famous Chuck Wagon Gang will be appearing in a free benefit concert for Pilots for Christ, Inc., at Nettles Auditorium on the campus of Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville Friday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Pilots for Christ, Inc. is a Christian non-profit organization based in Monroeville that helps fly needy people who are too ill to travel by any other means. Opening for the concert will be the Foyer Boyz of Tupelo, Miss. and a Monroe County gospel group, Joyful Noize will also perform. AIDS Prevention Coalition The Southwest Alabama AIDS Prevention Coalition (formerly called the Area 9 HIV Prevention Group) will have its monthly meeting Friday, Feb. 8 from 11 until noon in the Monroe County Health Department building in Monroeville. You may call 251-275-2804 for more information. Clarke Chapter #32 D.A.V. meets at fire station Clarke County Chapter #32 for the D.A.V. have relocated to the fire station in Gosport. Meetings will be every second Saturday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. Commander Archie Robinson announced. Governor to visit Jackson Gov. Bob Riley will be in Jackson Monday, Feb. 11. Riley will be at City Hall at 11 a.m. for the announcement of a major industrial project in Jackson. The event is expected to be the official announcement of the location of the New Gas Concepts (NGC), Inc., in the city's newly developed industrial park located off J.W. Andrews Highway. "The public is invited to attend to support our city and thank the governor for his support as he makes this significant announcement," Mayor Long said. DHR quarterly meeting set The Clarke County Department of Human Resources quarterly board meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 3:30 p.m. The board is located at 22609 Highway 84 in Grove Hill. Lou I. Boykin is the director. SWAIA meeting set Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will have its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at Jackson Steakhouse. The guest speaker will be Pamela P. Foster, M.D., M.P.H., Deputy Director, Institute for Rural Health Services, School of Medicine, The University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Black History Tea Clarke County Voters League located at 717 Depot Road in Jackson will observe its Annual Black History Tea Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. This event will be held at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House at 500 Vanity Park Drive in Jackson. The theme for 2008 is: Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a gift called the Present. JA's First Annual Horse Trail Ride Jackson Academy's First Annual Horse Trail Ride is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23. The cost will be $15 per rider or $30 per family. The ride will begin at 10 a.m. and will return around 4 p.m. Each rider will pack his/her own lunch. When you return to camp, entertainment will begin while a supper will be provided. An auction will follow. All activities will end by 8 p.m. No alcohol allowed. The ride will take place at the home of Tony and Ronda Beck located at 12209 Highway 69, Jackson, AL 36545. Take Highway 43 to Highway 69 in the Salitpa area. Look for the 12 mile marker. For those who do not have a horse, a hayride will be available. The Dravitan Civic Club Inc., African-American History Month event will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. at the New Hope #1 Baptist Church in Thomasville where Dr./Rev. James G. Curry is the pastor. The guest speaker will be Rev. Fred D. Taylor, National Director of Field Operations for the The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
