Suspect arrested for stealing firefighter equipment
By Kathryn F. Pickard News Reporter

Sylvester Brown of the Evergreen community in Jackson was arrested Sunday, Feb. 3 by Clarke County sheriff's deputies, for stealing $10,000 worth of firefighter equipment out of a vehicle at a residence in the nearby Chastain community.

Kathy Hall and her husband, who live on Chastain Hill had left earlier that day and her mother stayed at the house. When the Halls returned, Mrs. Hall noticed her car doors were open and a box of firefighting equipment was missing from the back seat.

She works for MSA, which supplies equipment to fire departments. Mrs. Hall then called 911.

While the Halls were in town a man knocked on their door and when her mother answered he told her he had run out of gas and asked her for some money. The woman replied that she couldn't help him and closed the door.

"Narcotics Investigator Corporal Steve Carlisle responded to the call and notified me to respond to the scene. Our Criminal Investigation Division gathered evidence. After talking with other residents in the area we learned that a subject had gone to several residences and knocked on the door, stating he was having some sort of vehicle trouble and asked for money," said Chief Investigator Ron Baggette.

Corporal Carlisle and Investigator Baggette found Brown in the area and he was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Later a fingerprint left on the door of Hall's car was found to be a match to Brown.

Brown was questioned and confessed to the theft and later took the deputies to where he hid the equipment, which was recovered.

Brown was charged with theft of property, first degree.
