Board members to run for reelection Marty Parker and Clinton Hawkins, members of the Clarke County Board of Education, announced at the Jan. 24 board meeting that they would seek reelection this year. Parker serves in District One, and Hawkins serves in District Five. Board member Charlton Anderson (District Two) has not yet decided if he will seek reelection. In addition, school superintendent Gerald Stephens will also run for another term. "My intentions are to serve the school children in Clarke County," he said. The primary election will be held June 3. In other action from the Jan. 24 board meeting, the school system will pay $27,424 in matching costs for a two-year contract with the Alabama Supercomputer Authority, a state consortium, for upgrading the system internet services. The school system has between 900 and 1,000 computers. • The following personnel changes were approved: resignation of Tony Johnson, assistant coach and driver education teacher at Jackson High School; hiring of Landon Hilt to teach an additional class at Jackson High School; and Wendy Chaney, a teacher at Grove Hill Elementary School, was approved for catastrophic sick leave. • Bills and accounts paid for December totaled $859,785.90, and payroll totaled $2,947,228.20. • The board increased the mileage rate for employees to 50.5 cents-per-mile. • January is school board recognition month, and the superintendent and board members received gifts from the various schools.
• A special called board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Feb. 7. The next regular board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Feb. 28.
