Fulton raises salaries for mayor, council The Fulton Town Council voted Tuesday to raise the pay of the mayor and council members. Council salaries increased from $110-a-month to $160-amonth, and the mayor's salary increased from $250-a-month to $400-a-month. The increases will go into effect with the next council, which will be elected on Aug. 26. Only council members Jennifer Stephens and Danny Bedwell have officially announced their intention to run for reelection. Council members did express concerns over recent layoffs from the 3-11 shift at Scotch Lumber Company before voting for the raises. Councilman Bedwell was concerned how the layoffs would affect tax revenues. "I don't look for the city to change that much," Mayor Mike Norris said. The mayor planned to look into some business licenses that had not been purchased. In other action from Tuesday's council meeting, the council approved a resolution to apply for a $264,365.73 Delta Regional Authority grant for the ongoing sewer project. The town must pay a $25,000 match. Mayor Norris also reported that the town would also apply for a Community Development Block Grant to pay for sewer. • The council approved a final total payment of $74,245.57 for the sewer treatment and collection systems for 65 homes, the Scotch Lumber Company office, the school house and the churches. • The Town of Fulton received a $7,238.80 grant from the state Department of Public Health to pay for mosquito spraying in 2008. • "Voice for the Animals," a first annual 5K Run, will be held beginning at 8 a.m. on April 5 in Fulton with proceeds going to toward a proposed county animal shelter. There will be a $15 early entry fee to the race. The cost is $20 the day of the race.
