Several area high school basketball programs have advanced to the sub-regional round of the playoffs with the conclusion of the area tournaments.

Much like the NCAA Invitational Tournament, there are 64 teams, in each class, looking to make the trip to Birmingham with the hopes of winning a state hoops crown.

In Class 4A Thomasville went on the road and beat host team Jackson 69-65 to claim the Area title and the right to host in the sub-regional game this Friday.

Daril Jackson and Tysean Thompson each had 16 points. Antron Holt added 11 points for the Tigers.

Gabriel Mass led Jackson with 13 points. Corey Besteda added 11 points.

Thomasville will host Andalusia while Jackson travels to Hillcrest- Evergreen.

In a reversal of fortunes the Lady Aggies went into Thomasville and beat the host Lady Tigers 40-35 to claim that area championship.

Genesis Bernard led Jackson with 21 points.

Jackson now will host Andalusia Thursday (today) while Thomasville must take to the road to Brewton to take on T.R. Miller.

Bears to make move in Class 2A

The Leroy Bears hoop's teams made things interesting in the area tourney finals as both games came right down to the wire.

The Bear's varsity team beat Flomaton 75-71 in overtime Monday night in Excel to claim the 2A Area 1 championship.

Derrick Johnson led LHS with 42 points but it was Patrick Rivers' free throws in OT that sparked the win. Rivers totaled 11 points in the win.

The Bears will host Red Level this Friday while Flomaton goes to Luverne.

Last Saturday the Lady Bears nipped Bayside 41-40 to earn the right to host Luverne in the subregionals Thursday night.

Tenera Pressley scored the game-clinching points in the final seconds of the game. Ada Collins led LHS with 12 points.

Lady Demons hope to repeat

The Lady Demons of McIntosh earned their 60th straight win, as they dispatched Fruitdale 81-30 Monday night.

Brittney Simmons had a quadruple-double as she scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, issued 12 assists and nabbed 11 steals.

The Lady Demond will host Marengo Thursday night in a battle of top-10 teams in Class 1A.

On the boy's side the Demons beat Sweet Water 58-49 to clinch the Area 1 championship.

Everette Horn led the charge with 18 points. Darrell Thomas added 14 points for the Demons, who will host A.L. Johnson Friday night at 7 p.m.

Sweet Water will travel to Beatrice to play defending state champion J.F. Shields.

The winners from the sub-regional games will travel to Troy next week to play in the South Regional held on the campus of Troy University.
