No reprieve for old CCHS
Despite a last minute effort to save the old Clarke County High School, backed by petitions with close to 1,000 signatures, the old school came tumbling down Monday. The 1936 building was vacated at the first of the year as classes moved into a new facility on the other side of the campus. A group that included Kathleen LaFlore started an e-mail and phone call campaign backed by the petition effort in an attempt to sway Superintendent of Education Gerald Stephens' and the county school board's decision to demolish the old building. School officials contended the building was in poor shape and said the demolition was included in the contract for the new school and that it was too late to make changes. Proponents said the building was historic and worthy of being preserved. They suggested it was in better shape than has been publicized. In the end, the school administration stuck with its decision. A parking lot for the new school is planned for the site. Photo by Jim Cox
