Spring Jubilee March 15 to benefit CCARC

The Clarke County Association for Retarded Citizens (CCARC) invites everyone to join in celebrating spring during its 12th Annual Spring Jubilee March 15 in Jackson. The event is also a time to celebrate the capabilities of individuals with cognitive and developmental disabilities.

The Jubilee located at 501 Forest Avenue in Jackson will begin Saturday, March 15 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Fifth Annual Silent Art Auction will be from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The guest emcee will be John Rogers, announcer for WMBV.

Registration for the Sixth Annual 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk will be at 7:30 a.m. with the run beginning at 8:30 a.m. A pre-registration discount is offered, (2007 Get Lost in Jackson Discount).

The Eighth Annual "Cruising for CCARC" sponsored by the Clarke County Southern Cruisers registration at 9 a.m. at Pic N Sav with the ride beginning at 10 a.m.

Canines on Parade, a dog fashion show will begin with a Doo- Dah parade at 12:30 and fashion show at 1 p.m.

A Gumbo Cook-off limited to 10 entries will be available. For more information call Suzette James at 251-247-2467 to register.

So get ready to run or walk in the Sixth Annual 5k/1m Fun Walk or Ride in the 8th Annual "Cruisin' for CCARC" motorcycle ride sponsored by the Clarke County Chapter of Southern Cruisers.

If neither of these are your cup of tea, bring your dog and join in the annual "Doo-Dah Parade" or, dress 'um up and enter your dog in CCARC's "Canines On Parade." Awards will be presented for the "Most Creative," "Funniest," "2008 Canine Vogue" (overall) and "Best Tail Wagger."

If food is what you're looking for (and a little competition), this year's "Gumbo Cook-Off," will surely tempt your taste buds. A Cake Sale and Walk is also planned. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be sold during the day.

For those of you looking for unique treasurers, "Special Creations" will have plenty of personalized antiques and art work such as ceramics, paintings, and painted tiles to choose from - all originally designed by the people of CCARC.

And don't forget the great items available in the Silent Art and Pottery Auction - handcrafts like painted china and pottery items.

For those with a green thumb interested in spring planting, make plans to check out the new greenhouse for your plants.

The Ice-Smith Greenhouse was completed in February 2006 and provides hands on learning for the individuals that are served. They are actively involved in all stages of growing plants - potting, watering, rooting and planting.

What greater sense of pride can be seen than witnessing first hand the daily growth and development of one's own work? There will be a variety of house and yard plants along with herbs, tomato and pepper plants.

Clarke County People First, a self-advocacy group, will be actively selling raffle tickets on a $100 cash drawing to raise funds for individuals to attend People First State Conferences and other meetings.

In past years, People First has given back to the community by purchasing needed supplies for Special Education classes, assistance with natural disaster recovery efforts, donation to the Ronald McDonald House by saving aluminum tabs, volunteering as Salvation Army Bell Ringers, participating in Jackson's Spring Clean Up, and donating to United Way the proceeds from collecting and selling aluminum cans.

People First also hosts special events during the year such as a fun day of swimming, ball game and picnic lunch.

In addition to the raffle, People First will have a snow cone booth, sponsor the horse and buggy ride for all to enjoy at spring jubilee.

And if you just want to sit back, relax, visit and enjoy a spring day, there will be plenty of great entertainment featuring "After Five" - a well-known band that plays throughout the Gulf Coast.

Other activities include bingo, cake walk/sale, horse and buggy rides, door prizes and lots of activities for children - moonwalk, games and face painting.

For more information, registration forms, volunteer opportunities, etc. call Bebe Garrett at CCARC, 251-246-3120 or visit the web site at www.clarkearc.com.

March is Membership Month - don't forget to renew membership or become a new member of CCARC.
