Bootlegging arrest nets lots of alcohol
By Kathryn F, Pickard News Reporter

Deputy Jim Mundie shows large haul of beer, liquor from Whatley bootlegger.
A man was arrested in Whatley Sunday for bootlegging alcohol by local law enforcement.

"This was the result of an ongoing investigation by the Clarke County Sheriff's Department and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. We made several buys at the residence, which gave us good cause to obtain a search warrant," said Canine/Interdiction Deputy Jim Mundie.

The search warrant was executed Saturday at the residence of Michael Howard on Morning Star Road. Howard was not at the residence at that time, but was arrested Sunday.

Lawmen confiscated over 90 beers, over 30 fifths of liquor, over 20 3.75 milliliter bottles of liquor, over 50 five milliliter bottles of liquor, several 1.75 milliliter bottles of liquor, serving glasses, mixers, plastic bags for purchases and five serving racks which held five bottles of alcohol each.

Howard was arrested on a previous charge of assault, third degree and was charged with illegal possession of alcohol.

Other officers assisting with the execution of the search warranty were Deputy Patrick Champion, Alabama State Troopers and Coffeeville Police Department.

"This was one of many ongoing investigations. This criminal activity is not going to be tolerated by any of the local law enforcement agencies," Mundie added.
