Fred Kilgore to celebrate 80th birthday Saturday
Fred and his wife, Ann, are both Auburn University graduates. Following graduation they married in 1952. Fred served in the U.S. Army and then went to work in the Auburn Cooperative Extension Service. He holds an educational specialist degree from Auburn University and a masters of science degree from Mississippi State University. He was an assistant county agent in Sumter County before moving to Clarke County to become Extension Coordinator in 1973. He retired in 1984 after 30 years with the Extension Service. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1985 after 32 years. He's been active in retirement, maintaining a big orchard of peach and apple trees as well as 100- foot rows of blueberries, blackberries and grapes until his health forced him to stop. He shared the produce with his friends and neighbors for years. He also operated a self-storage business in Grove Hill and Thomasville. The Kilgores enjoyed camping vacations for years. The couple has long been active in Baptist churches where they have lived. Today they are members of Fulton First Baptist Church. He has served as a member of building committees at churches he has belonged to and was the coordinator for 10 out of 19 Grove Hill Baptist missions trips. Fred and Ann continue to enjoy life despite health problems. He had six heart bypasses in 1999. Ann Kilgore said, "We have found the Lord faithful in answering prayers and bringing them through. God has been a constant rock and has blessed us greatly. We will spend the rest of our lives continuing as before and being thankful for good friends and praising God for every day."
Ann Kilgore along with the Kilgore children are hosting Saturday's party. The children include Karen Eubanks of Montgomery, Don Kilgore of Demopolis and Alan Kilgore of Oconto Falls, Wisconsin. The Kilgores also have seven granddaughters.
