The Clarke County High School Bulldogs advanced to the Class 3A state title game as they pushed their way past the Pirates of Winfield 63-50 Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham.

"We came out and played great defensively," Coach Kendric Davis said. "That was important because we looked timid when they made a run to get back in the game."

The Bulldogs held a slim 28-24 at halftime then used a smothering defense in the second half to run away with the win.

"Coach told me to drive inside with the ball to open up my outside shot," Deforest Taite, who led CCHS with 22 points and eight rebounds said. "In the send half I was able to make the outside shots."

Justin Burroughs added 15 points and five rebounds. Kenneth Kimbrough had nine points and six rebounds. Colton McConnell had eight points, six of which came in a run where CCHS took the lead for good in the third quarter. Jeffery Mc- Connell had five points.

It was a rematch from the football playoffs in which CCHS eliminated the Pirates 19-18.

The CCHS fans showed their support for the Bulldogs at the BJCC Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (26-5) now face 2-time defending state champion Madison Academy, 65-54 winners over Leeds in the other 3A semi-final contest.

These two teams met last year in the first round of the final four tournament with Madison Academy winning 54-45.

"We have a lot more experience this year," Davis said. "Bawa (Madison Academy's 7-foot tall center) is going to be tough, but I feel like we have more people to throw at them and that is going to be important."

Game time is Thursday (tonight) at 8 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center in Birmingham.
Justin Burroughs fires up a shot Tuesday.
