Clarke County heads to second Final Four
Tournament MVP Kenneth Kimbrough owned the paint in the game as he led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down five rebounds. Deforest Taite, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 12 points and five rebounds. Justin Burroughs, the third player from CCHS named to all-tournament team, had 17 points and seven rebounds. CCHS outscored Straughn 50-28 in the paint and scored 27 points off turnovers compared to just nine for the Tigers. It was nip and tuck but in the end the fourth ranked Clarke County High School Bulldogs were able to pull away with a 91-75 South Regional semi-final win over Lafayette High School Thursday afternoon in Troy. "Offensively we played pretty good," Coach Kendric Davis said. "We scored 91 points, but on defense… no one scores 75 points on us. Cruising with a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter CCHS saw Lafayette fight back to within five points with just 4:51 left in the game. But that was as close as LHS would get as CCHS then went on a 9-0 sprint to bring home the win. "I think we got sloppy and sluggish," Davis said. "I would have thought our experience would have helped us but we played tight early on." Clarke County was led by a quartet of seniors as Deforest Taite led all scorers with 28 points. Justin Burroughs added 23 points. Kenneth Kimbrough chipped in 16 points and Dwayne Owens had 11 points. The Bulldogs (25-5) shot a blistering 34-of-55 from the floor for a 61.8 percentage. At the charity stripe they were 20-of-25.
The biggest stat in the game for CCHS was the fact the outscored Lafayette 30 to eight on fast-break points.
