Four indicted for firearm violations
From Staff Reports

Four men in Clarke County face federal indictments on firearm violations.

Steven C. Furr and Winford Danny Kelsoe of Grove Hill have been indicted on charges of being felons in possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to U.S. Attorney Deborah J. Rhodes of the Southern District of Alabama.

The indictment charges that Furr was previously convicted of sale of a controlled substance in Nevada in 1996. Kelsoe was previously convicted of burglary, third degree in Clarke County in 1999.

By virtue of these convictions, and Furr and Kelsoe's resulting status as convicted felons, each is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Furr and Kelsoe are alleged to have possessed a .22 caliber, six-shot revolver and 100 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition on Sept. 5, 2006, Rhodes said.

Possession of a firearm or ammunition by a previously convicted felon is a violation of Title 18, United States Code Section 922(g)(1). The statutory maximum penalty provided by law is 10 years imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with assistance of the Clarke County Sheriff's Office and the Grove Hill Police Department. The case will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Alabama.

In addition, a federal grand jury sitting in the Southern District returned Feb. 29 a twocount indictment against Jason Fitzgerald McCall of Thomasville, Rhodes said.

The indictment charges that McCall, a convicted felon, knowingly possessed a .380 caliber pistol in Thomasville on Oct. 14, 2007. The indictment charges a separate federal offense because the firearm in question had an obliterated serial number.

If he is convicted, McCall faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.

As in all criminal cases, the indictments returned by the Grand Jury is only a charge, and the defendants are presumed innocent.

The McCall case was investigated by the Thomasville Police Department and ATF. The case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney D. Andrew Sigler.

Furthermore, Rhodes' office announced Monday that Bradley Scott Bailey of Grove Hill has been indicted on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment charges that Bailey was previously convicted of felony DUI in Clarke County Circuit Court in March 2006. With his status as a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. He is alleged to have possessed a Mossberg .12 gauge shotgun on Oct. 3, 2007.

The case was investigated by ATF with the assistance of the Grove Hill Police Department and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
