"(Clarke County) is still a tough county for Republicans to win in," said Edmon McKinley, chairman of the county Republican Party. He spoke Feb. 28 at a meeting of county GOP committee in the county courthouse.

The committee passed a primary resolution that officially sanctions the June 3 GOP primary. Qualifying ends at 5 p.m. on April 4. The qualifying fee will be two percent of the annual salary of the position sought, he said.

He encouraged members of the committee to seek out Republican candidates for this year's primary. There will be three positions each up for election from the county commission (Districts 2, 4 and 5) and board of education (Districts 1, 2 and 5). The county school superintendent, license commissioner and revenue commissioner positions are also up for election.

The runoff election date for the primary is July 15.

Pierce Boyd, District Seven chairman of the Alabama GOP Executive Committee, was the guest speaker at the meeting.

McKinley also stressed the need to recruit teenage Republicans, ages 13-19. "We have a real issue we have to work on - youth," he said.

He expects John McCain, if nominated as the GOP presidential candidate, to pick a young vice presidential candidate.

There has been some talk of Alabama Governor Bob Riley being selected as a VP candidate, however, Boyd was concerned that if Riley was elected it would put Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. in the governor's office.
