Hospital purchases new CAT scan machine
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Board of Directors of the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital approved Feb. 28 a new 16-slice CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scan machine for the facility.

The new scanner will cost $414,000 with a $10,210.71 monthly cost to the hospital for 84 months. The current oneslice CAT scan machine, which has been used for seven years at the local hospital, was also made by GE, said Phyllis Barnes, Radiology Manager.

The new machine will be a lot faster and will be able to accommodate patients who weigh up to 450 pounds compared to the old machine, which had a 300-pound limit. In addition, the new scanner will allow tests for pulmonary embolisms, she said.

"This technology will be good for 10 years," said Doug Sewell, hospital administrator. "…The volume of our CT's will go up. We will have more capacity."

The new machine will come in a month's time and will take a week to install. The hospital will ultimately be able to sell the old scanner for $20,000.

In other action from the Feb. 28 board meeting, visits were up for all three clinics in January. There were 200 more visits at the Grove Hill clinic, over 100 more in Fulton and 60 more in Coffeeville, said Tina Syphrit, clinic administrator. There were approximately 1,000 visits overall

in January. During the recent flu outbreak there were 80 visits-aday.

• Sewell praised the work of Lyle Osborne, the hospital's IT (information technology) specialist.

• The board reappointed the following to the medical staff: Maria Aquendo, MD (active), physician in the emergency room; David Hubbs, MD (active); and Harold Harris, CRNA, and Mary Ellen Huckabee, CRNP (both reappointed for Allied Healthcare). The board approved the appointment of Dr. John Michael O'Dowd, consulting staff-cardiology.

• The Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor another jewelry sale April 24 and 25.
