Children's book author visits Packers Bend
Chance & Scyrene

Gail Marshall
On Monday, Feb. 25 noted children's book author Kerry Madden was at the Monroe Intermediate School in Packers Bend. Mrs. Madden is the author of a popular series of children's books about the fictional Weems family of Maggie Valley. This trilogy of books is set in North Carolina's Smoky Mountains.

Mrs. Madden conducted a writing workshop with the seventh and eighth graders at the school. She encouraged them in developing their writing skills and did a few writing exercises with them. One in particular was for the students to name their favorite place and to tell something about it. I was very proud to observe that these students have some amazing story telling skills. Each one vividly described their favorite place and gave enough details that one could actually imagine being there with them. Mrs. Madden was also impressed and shared some of her pictures, souvenirs and other memorabilia that helps her to relax and get into a creative mood.

The characters in her Maggie Valley trilogy are loosely based on her own children, one of whom is traveling with her this week as she visits area schools. Norah says she has enjoyed her visit to Alabama this week. Norah inspired the character of Caroline, the fairy child, in the latest book, Jessie's Mountain, which was released for sale on Valentine's Day.

Mrs. Madden and Norah enjoyed morning and afternoon sessions with the students, who I'm sure learned a lot from her visit. Librarian Jessica Harmon, Principal Betty Madden and other guests also enjoyed listening as Mrs. Madden brought her stories to life. She plans to visit schools in Clarke County the remainder of the week. She currently lives in Los Angeles, Calif.
