From Our Files The Clarke County Democratic Executive Committee met. District 1 County Commissioner Clarence Watters paid his qualifying fee to run for probate judge. Incumbent PJ Fred Huggins had announced his retirement. Wayne Brunson and Sid Armistead, circuit clerk candidates, were present. Circuit Clerk Rip Armistead was also retiring. Edmon McKinley, now chairman of the local Republican Party, was Democratic Party chairman at the time. Robbie Moore, a Thomasville native, was named manager of Christian radio station WMBV in Dixons Mills. Lee B. Williams relocated his law office from the second floor of the [then] Clarke County Democrat building to the renovated Sam Chapman residence. Larry Walters Furniture opened a store in Thomasville. March 17, 1988 50 years ago Candidates for sheriff included Jenkins Hill and challengers J. C. Roberts and Chet Noble. Running for circuit cerk were tFelton Garrick, and challengers Harvey Jackson and W. W. "Bill" McIntyre. Robert D. "Robbie" Coleman and W. Cecil Johnson were challenging Probate Judge Coma Garrett Jr. C. W. Skipper of Whatley advertised top prices for sweet gum. A one gallon syrup bucket of sweet gum would bring $14; an 8-lb. lard bucket, $17.50; and a 50-lb. lard can, $101.50. Western Auto of Grove Hill advertised Wizard sewing machines for $39.95. You could finance the machines for just $4 down and $1.25 a week.
