Saturday was a good day for baseball at CCHS
With basketball having overlapped baseball and softball by a good two weeks, that means I am about seven or eight games behind as far as the high school teams go. Alot can happen in that short time. If you look back to the 2007 season, this may have been one of the best ever for area schools. There was one state champion, Leroy; two runner's-up, Washington County and Millry; two others advanced to the quarterfinals, Jackson and Clarke County; and everyone else made the playoffs. So the prospects for 2008 are looking pretty good. I did get a chance to go to the first varsity game to be played at the Gerald Stephens Sports Complex this past Saturday. Clarke County was playing a split double dipper with Millry and Monroe County. Believe it or not, even though baseball conjures up thoughts of warm afternoons with a slight breeze, the first game was played with "cooler-than-football" temperatures and good 20-mile-per-hour gale winds coming out of the North. It was not your traditional baseball weather, but that did not matter. The fact that the game was played was a testament to the hard work of several people. There are many people, some of which have no children that would benefit from the new complex, that did lots of work to help make the dream a reality. For years CCHS has used the field at S.P. Hudson Park but a few years ago a smart remark by one of the powers-that-be sparked the work to get a field for the Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs to have one of their own. A sarcastic thanks is all I have to say about that, but back to Saturday. If you are a trivia buff, like myself then here are a few tidbits about the game with Millry. The first pitch ever thrown was a strike thrown by CCHS' Josh Watford. The first run was scored by CCHS' Rashad Snell. Hunter Cross got the first RBI. Justin Robinson had a doubledouble first as he had the first home run and the first grandslam. Watford got the first win on the mound. It would be easy to say everything was a first, and it was, but the ones mentioned above are the kind of things that people down the road will discuss. Let's say that in a few years someone hits a towering home run. There will be someone in the crowd who will ponder the question of who hit the first dinger. The Bulldogs are proud of their new digs. It shows in the way they carry themselves when they take the field, but also before and after games. Players are also the groundskeepers. Just like any school that has a great ball park, the players are intergral in maintaining the area. The unbiased sports reporter is happy that all of our area schools now have quality facilities, probably some of the best fields anywhere in the state. And the alumni is twice as happy for CCHS. Without a doubt, anytime a school comes from anywhere to play, they will leave saying they have played in one of the best fieldsin the state. So to all of the baseball and softball teams I wish them good luck. The season will fly by and before you know it we will be back in Montgomery, once again flexing the athletic muscles of Southwest Alabama.
That's all folks........
