Volunteers thanked for litter pickup
From Staff Reports

Grove Hill City Clerk Cheryl Hicks picks up litter on Old Highway 5.
Over four-and-a half tons of trash were collected March 14 and 15 in the first annual "Pride of Old 5" litter campaign. Over 100 people picked up litter on 13 miles, from the city limits of Grove Hill to the city limits of Thomasville.

It took approximately eight total hours to collect 600 bags filled with trash.

Virginia Harrigan, who spearheaded the effort, thanked the mayors of Grove Hill, Fulton and Thomasville, area police and firefighters, and the Sheriff's Department for their support. There was a special thanks to the Town of Fulton for the contribution of their work crew and equipment to load the dumpsters.

Other team leaders included Betty Davis, Marilyn Raybon, Kay Harrison, Carol Hill, Roselyn Sales, Prat Patton and Catherine Neal.

"Thank you for your phenomenal hard work," she said to the volunteers. "What a beautiful gift to your county."

The residents and friends of Old Highway 5 are now offering a challenge to residents on other county roads to match the effort and help PALS in the 2008 Spring Clean up, Harrigan said.
