Vying for club seats Alabama's congressional seats are like an old fraternal club....once you become a member you are there for life, barring some unforgivable transgression. A few years back, Artur Davis was able to unseat Earl Hillard in the Seventh District but Hillard was so incompetent that the only thing that surprised folks was that he stayed around as long as he did. Republican Congressman Terry Everett of the Second District surprised many when he announced last fall that he would not seek re-election. The district includes the southeast corner of the state, stretching from parts of Montgomery to Dothan and Enterprise. Democrats jumped at the chance to reclaim the longtime GOP seat. Then, just last week, Democratic Congressman Bud Cramer of Huntsville said he is stepping down in the Fourth District and Republicans are already smacking at the idea of taking one of only two of the state's seven districts held by Democrats. It will be an interesting year and you can bet that the national Democratic and GOP parties will contribute to try and retain, or take as the case may be, one or both of these open districts.
Membership in this prestigious lifelong (or as long as you want) club doesn't come cheap and we'll be anxious to see what the "dues" will be for these vacancies.
