Principal's Address

We are "Marching into spring" with many activities at GHES. The saying "Busy as a Bee" definitely applies to our school calendar.

As we look toward April and May we know that the "busy time" is yet to come. Our teachers and office staff make many efforts to keep our students, parents, and community aware of the many activities in our school.

We ask that you please pay close attention to the letters and notes that are sent home with your child. This is our best way to get information to you, so that you will be aware of your child's class or school projects, progress and activities.

Checking backpacks and folders each day also lets your child know that you are interested in the things he/she is learning. Communication between home and school is such an important part of educating the "whole child." Thanks for your continued support and commitment to this school.

The Third Nine Weeks grading period has just ended and we are rapidly approaching the end of another school year. With only nine weeks left, we are beginning to realize how much we have to do and the amount of time in which to do it.

As spring approaches, so does our state wide assessments. This year, students in grades 1-4 will be taking the Stanford 10 test. Our third and fourth grades will also be taking the ARMT (Alabama Reading Math Test). These assessments are very important and provide valuable information about our students and school. We use the test results each year as tools for improving our instructional program.

For three years in a row, our students have performed well and we are proud to be one of the Title I schools in the state of Alabama to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon our 2006-07 test data! The report indicates that GHES met 17 goals out of 17.

Annual measurable objectives for reading and math, attendance and participation rate are components used to determine AYP status. Although we are especially proud and have celebrated our successes, this is another school year and testing is fast approaching. The faculty and staff have been working hard to prepare our students for these assessments. There is no way to "teach the test;" but timing events, reinforcing good test taking practices, and providing preparation activities at least prepares our students for the testing process.

Our parents also become a vital part of the testing process. When parents become involved and understand the importance of testing, they are playing a significant role in the success of their child.

Now… the pressure is on. We must not only maintain the high expectations from last year, but raise the standards a bit higher. We can do it… Our students can do it… but only if everyone continues to help. Involvement with our children's education is crucial.

We want to continue the positive path that we are on by ensuring that we do "Whatever It Takes" so that no child is left behind.
