Illegal alien arrested for identity theft

An arrest was made March 21 on a hispanic male after a joint investigation with Clarke County Sheriff's Office, the Jones County, Florida Sheriff's Office and Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana on a theft of identity.

A Robert Espinosa of Middleburg, Fla. reported to Jones County detectives that he learned that someone was using his identity, said Ron Baggette, chief investigator with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department. The detective contacted Baggette with information that the suspect might be living and working in Clarke County.

A detective was also contacted in Assumption Parish, La., and it was learned that the suspect was hired by a company named Michel Industrial Services. They were given information for employment such as Social Security Card, W-4 Tax form etc. and this was in the victim's name from Florida. The suspect was questioned by Ron Baggette, and he stated that his name was Victor.

After recieving his Identification, a payroll check was discovered in the wallet in the name of Robert Espinosa, and the victim's address from Florida was also on the check.

The supect was later learned to be Victor Salas from Mexico and was in the United States illegally, Baggette said. Salas stated through a translator that he purchased the victim's identity illegally from an individual whom he did not know.

Salas was arrested and charged with identity theft, first degree, and immigration officials were contacted. A detainer was placed on Salas for them.
