Politicking on tags

We usually remain silent on local political races, but the political campaign platform of a Republican license commissioner candidate warrants a comment.

Jamie Wilkins says he will "make my race a referendum on the $25 car tag tax. I am completely against this expensive tax and will work to repeal it. A vote for Jamie Wilkins is the same as a 'No' vote on the $25 car tag tax."

Mr. Wilkins qualified for the wrong office- he needs to be running for the Clarke County Commission or the State Legislature. The license commissioner sells tags and licenses and keeps up with the money but has no say- none whatsoever- as to what the taxes and license fees are. He would have more authority to try and change the tag fee s as a commissioner or legislator.

We won't get into the merits or demerits of the vehicle tag fee here. We have previously voiced our support for the fee to help buy property for a new industrial park where Louisiana Pacific has just started producing oriented strand board at a new plant.

If you want to vote for Mr. Wilkins based on how he plans to run the office, that is fine. We suggest you ask him what he will do differently to make the office run better. Don't vote for him based on the erroneous idea that he is going to get the tag tax repealed.

He can't do that. He may not know he can't but you, the voter, need to know it.
