The Wilson Hall Middle School Junior Betas had a whale of a time at the 2008 Alabama Junior Beta Convention in Montgomery on March 10- 11. They brought home a boat load of trophies - one first place in Songfest, two second places, and two third places.

The entire delegation of 42 students sang a song set to the tune of "Summer Love." The original lyrics were re-worked to center on this year's convention theme of Beta: An Ocean of Opportunity. They took first place in this competition.

Savannah Mozingo wrote an essay that focused on the Finding Nemo movie. Her second place essay was entitled "Finding Beta." Morgan Strong earned second place in the speech contest.

Wesley Rhodes placed third in the poetry contest with his recitation of a poem that he had composed entitled "The Preacher's Son." Katrina Gilchrist won a third place ribbon for her embroidery entry in the arts and crafts competition.

Other competitors included Jennifer Henderson in the special talent contest, B.J. Ezell in the black and white photography competition, Mollie Paul in color photography, Kayla Squires in handmade jewelry, and Morgan Strong in sketching. Four eighth graders competed in academic competitions: Halie Moore, English, Kayla Squires, Math, Tyler Hutto, science, and Wesley Rhodes, social studies. Travarus Davis participated in the spelling bee.

Other WHMS students who attended the convention were Kimbell Bush, Matt Floyd, Trey Morrissette, Payne Wilson, Bryant Elmore, Zack Webb, Deandre Fuller, Jacobie Cheeseboro, Brittany Hollins, Monifa Knight, Victoria Leggett, Nicole Mobley, Kelsey Rogers, Kyren Lewis, Alex Waters, Laquita Morrissette, Mychella Armstead, Mary Ray Cross, Candace Armistead, Rachel Brownlee, Keshona Cade, Alexis Cowan, Geona Dial, Tia Frazier, Lauryn Martin, Chelsey Simpson, Jelerria Stabler, Melanie Washington, Lashayveion Welch, Nakia Whitsett, and Tierra Williams.

Chaperones were Pat Squires, Audra Paul, Dave Rhodes, Principal Larry Bagley, Renea Henderson, Joe Henderson, and Donna Andrews. The sponsors for the club are Tammy Dannelly, Annell Gordon, and Cheryl Clarke.
