WHMS celebrates Black History Month
For example, in Mrs. Wilson's eighth grade English class, we have learned about many different people like David Sacher, Henry "Box" Brown, Peg Leg Joe, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many more. I'll bet that you didn't know that Marva Collins was born in Monroeville, Alabama? The movies we watched in class included Maya Angelou's documentary, the play A Raisin in the Sun, Harriet Tubman in The Underground Railroad, and A Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's Life. We also did research in the library and played trivia games and worked crossword puzzles and search-a-words on Black History information. We even had a writing competition to see whose article would be selected for the newspaper. Two winners were selected, and I am one of them; Shavon Howard was the other student.
Our school also had a Black History Month Essay Contest. For grades five and six, the first place winner was Caleb Smith, the second place winner was Cadadra Hunt, and the third place winner was Tekedra Jones. For grades seven and eight, the first place winner was Deandre Fuller, the second place winner was Jenny Henderson, and the third place winner was Rachel Brownlee.
