A construction company executive told several hundred people at an appreciation reception for business and industry leaders in Jackson that his company would be building an office in Jackson as well as constructing a new $8.5 million hotel.

Tom Bolton of Cooper Brothers Construction of Selma said March 20 that his company is building an office on Clolinger Road because "we believe Jackson will be the growth center [of the region] over the next 25 years." Cooper Brothers built the new addition for New Era Cap Co.'s Jackson plant and constructed the new Clarke County High School in Grove Hill.

Bolton also announced that Cooper Brothers will be the contractor for a new $8.5 million three-story Hampton Inn to be built at the intersection of Highway 43 and the Walker Springs Road. He said it would be the nicest facility of its kind between Mobile and Selma.

The hotel has been rumored for some time and the announcement Thursday surprised even Mayor Richard Long, who has been working to secure the new lodging establishment for some time.

Bolton was not the only one to tell of plans for Jackson. Representatives of other businesses and industries that have opened, expanded or announced openings over the past year were allowed time to speak too. Alex F. Farris IV, project manager for New Gas Concepts, a new wood pellet industry recently announced for Jackson, said the community had been very welcoming and responsive. Site work on the new $118 million plant in the new industrial park on Highway 177 will start soon.

Also at the reception, longtime Jackson Industrial Development Board Chairman Paul Parham II recently retired after 25 years as chairman was honored.

Mayor Long presented Parham with a plaque and a gift certificate for an original work of art of Parham's choosing and proclaimed the day, "Paul H. Parham II Day."

Long noted that Parham has been chairman of the local industrial board since 1983, "He has been instrumental in growing the city of Jackson," Long said.

Early in the evening, Mayor Long and Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce President Marty Parker welcomed the large crowd.

Long said, "The city and chamber say 'thanks to all.' Without you we couldn't operate the city. You provide jobs, your employees shop in Jackson and the city reaps sales tax revenue.

"We thank all of you- every business and employee is important. We will support you 100 percent."
