April Fool? It may have been appropriate that Tuesday, April 1 marked the halfway point in the Alabama Legislature's regular session. Legislators have met for 15 days and have 15 to go. Not a whole lot has been accomplished in those 15 days. The only major bill to make it through both the House and Senate has been legislation to restrict laundering of campaign contributions through transfers between political action committees (PACs). But since each chamber passed a different version, they have not been able to compromise and it could die. The main job of legislators is to pass state budgets. No action has been taken on the budgets because the governor's office and legislators can't agree on how much tax money will be available. They are millions apart and both sides have been waiting on firm numbers as to how much money has been collected so far this year. April 1, by the way, also marked the halfway point of the state's fiscal year. The House, to give it its due, has passed some meaningful legislation but the Senate is being contrary as usual. It is business as usual on Goat Hill- monkey business that is. Tuesday may have been April Fool's Day but the fooling may go on for another 15 legislative days, at least.
We wonder: Are legislators being the fools or are the Alabama voters who put them there the real fools?
