Clarke 2008-09 school year starts Aug. 7
Calendar approved
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Clarke County Board of Education approved March 20 the calendar for the 2008-2009 school year. The recommendation came from the School Calendar Committee including certificated and support personnel, said School Superintendent Gerald Stephens. "We like to involve everyone," he said.

The first day of school will be Aug. 7, and the last day will be May 28, 2009. Christmas Holidays will run from Dec. 19 to Jan. 6, 2009. Spring Holidays will run March 23-27, 2009.

"This is basically the same calendar we had this year," he said. Stephens expressed concern that the state government is trying to have more influence in school calendars, particularly dates when the school year starts.

"Tourism has entered into it," he said. "…They want all schools to start on a date that they decide…rather than let each community decide. That's a big thing in legislation this year. We fight it every year."

Grant to renovate old CCHS library

In other action from the Thursday meeting, the school system received a $250,000 grant from the Alabama Public School and College Education Incentive Fund to renovate the old library building on the Clarke County High School campus. The building will be used as a technical training and professional development center, Stephens said.

The new band room should be ready before the next school year begins. The new parking lot and student recreation area will be finished soon, he said. Personnel matters

The following personnel changes were approved:

• a leave of absence for Janger Sullivan, a special education aide at Jackson Intermediate School, and Jennifer Abston, a teacher at Wilson Hall Middle School;

• the continuation of employment for a temporary maintenance employee Corey Bell;

• the resignation of Sharon Goodman, a clerical employee at Gillmore Elementary School;

• family medical leave for Tamiko Taylor, a teacher at Jackson Middle School.

Bills and accounts for February totaled $784,922.05, and payroll totaled $2,883,571.80.

The next board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on April 23.
