'Read Across America' celebrated
"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday than reading to a child? On March 3, Petra Autry and Rebecca Vick (below left) served their reading class students at Wilson Hall Middle School green eggs and ham, followed by a reading of the acclaimed book "Green Eggs and Ham" written by Dr. Seuss. After Ms. Vick read to them, the students were treated to another Dr. Seuss book called "Horton Hears a Who" via computer download from the NEA Read Across America website. Dakota Phillips (below right) enjoys reading Dr. Seuss' books. Teachers and students look forward to the Read Across America event every year.
Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of children and learning. Also, his use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for teaching young children the basic skills that they need to be successful readers. When we celebrate Dr. Seuss and reading, we send a clear message to America's children that reading is not only important---It is FUN!
