Friday is last day to qualify for primaries

The deadline to qualify for elected offices on the June 3 primary ballot is Friday, April 4 at 5 p.m. and so far only a handful of candidates have qualified with either the local Democratic or Republican parties.

Democratic candidates

According to Lee Williams, the county Democratic chairman, the following had qualified as of Tuesday:

• Linda C. Goodman (incumbent) of Grove Hill, county license commissioner;

• Joe Hunt (incumbent), Clarke County Commission, District 4;

• Tyrone Moye of Jackson, County Commission, District 4;

• Teri Tidwell of Gainestown, County Commission, District 4;

• Rhondel B. Rhone (incumbent) of Fulton, County Commission, District 5;

• Marty Lee Parker (incumbent) of Grove Hill, county Board of Education, District 1;

• Gerald Stephens (incumbent) of Thomasville, county school superintendent.

Paul Bradford, County Commission, District Two, and Clinton Hawkins, county Board of Education, District Five, are expected to qualify before the Friday deadline. Charlie Anderson of Thomasville is the District Two school board representative but has not stated whether or not he will run again.

District Judge Bill Kimbrough has qualified for re-election with the State Democratic Party, as that position requires. He had no opposition as of Tuesday.

Democratic hopefuls may qualify with Williams at his Grove Hill law office at the corner of Cobb and Court Streets.

Republican candidates

According to Edmon McKinley, county Republican chairman, only three candidates have qualified as of Tuesday:

• Jay Ladell Ott, County Commission, District 2;

• Chris Beverly (incumbent), revenue commissioner;

• Jamie Wilkins, license commissioner.

GOP candidates can qualify through Friday with McKinley at his law office on Wilson Avenue in downtown Thomasville.

The primary election is June 3. Any necessary runoffs will be July 15.

The general election for federal, state and county offices is Nov. 4.
