Study Club enjoys a variety of programs The Community Study Club has enjoyed programs during the first quarter of the year that promoted Clarke County's pride. In January, when Mrs. Mary English and Mrs. Betty Barlow hosted the meeting at the Southern Magnolia, Roy Waite, Clarke County Emergency Management Agency Director, was the speaker. He described the high-tech innovative systems in his department, told how available data is sorted, explained that needed information can be found quickly and shared the ways that networking sends information to all parts of the area. Members expressed appreciation for the knowledge management and the emergency preparedness that provided safety for citizens in the county. The meeting in February was held in the home of Mrs. Susan Harrigan with Mrs. Shae Skipper as co-hostess. Club members circled the work area in the kitchen and the hostesses prepared a meal in Food Channel style. The program showed that area parents choose fresh food carefully and prepare wholesome, hearthealthy meals for their families. Miss Julia Ann Deas and Mrs. Appie O'Melia entertained the club at the Southern Magnolia in March. Mrs. Virginia Harrigan introduced First Sergeant Kenny Pritchett, a native of Whatley, who has served his country for 37 years-including two tours of duty in Iraq. He is dedicated and passionate about his mission and gave an interesting and honest opinion of the situation in Iraq. Club members were proud to be in the room with Clarke County's own military hero. At the end of each program President French Downey conducted a business session. The list of discussions and announcements includes the following: Mrs. O'Melia announced that plans had been made for arts lessons to be taught in local elementary schools by artists from the Mobile Museum of Art. Mrs. Virginia Harrigan distributed and discussed "Pledges of Sponsors for the concert." Mrs. Jimmy Butts showed the Alabama Federated Women's Club (AFWC) awards that were presented at the annual meeting. Mrs. Skipper explained the planned schedule for FAWN (Clarke County Soil and Water Conservation District) and listed volunteers. Mrs. Pat Williams thanked members for providing and serving refreshments at two events in the Grove Hill Public Library - the dedication of the O'Melia Family Room and Jim Herod's book signing. Mrs. English, treasurer, reported that all donations listed in the club's annual budget had been delivered. The club welcomed two new members during the quarter, Mrs. Gayle Leathers and Mrs. Nanelle Adams.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 15 with Mrs. Suzanne Cox and Mrs. Kate Jordan as hostesses.
