Help poor dogs, cats Dear Editor, I was one of the privileged people who had the opportunity to meet with the Animal Shelter Task Force concerning the need for an animal shelter in Clarke County. I am an avid lover of animals and I fully believe that we all have a responsibility to take care of Gods' little creatures. Every year there are so many animals who, are abused or they are bought because as puppies and kittens they are so cute, but you know what? They grow up and become dogs and cats and then they are no longer wanted so they are thrown out by the roadside like garbage to fend for themselves. Can any of us imagine being thrown out by the roadside in some desolate area with no food or water then the night comes with no place to sleep except the cold ground and no roof over your head when it starts to rain? Could we envision what it would be like to have a pouring rain and lightning all around you and not even have a porch to sit on as the cold rain runs all over your body with no place to go for help and some small bit of shelter? I often think about how horribly helpless a dog or cat mom must feel when she and her babies are thrown away and she can't find a nice dry place to stay or enough food for her to eat so that her milk comes plentiful for her babies and then they start to die from a slow agonizing death of starvation. How as human beings can we let this happen? If we had a shelter then maybe we could prevent so many innocent animals from suffering due to this type of cruel deed. I wish not only to encourage but to plead earnestly with our governing bodies and all of Clarke County to join in our efforts to have a nice animal shelter. This shelter means so much for all concerned. It would help the county in the efforts to control rabies, unwanted births, and also the dangers of a stray coming into your yard while your children play and biting one of them. If your child is bitten by a stray this means you would have to visit a doctor and the possibility of a series of rabies shots. With this shelter I should think that the chances of this would be less likely to happen. There will be petitions in circulation in the next coming days and I urge everyone to please sign them so that our governing bodies will know how much this is needed and wanted. If you are interested in signing I have one of the petitions so feel free to get in touch with me at 334-636-4270. Remember: We give dogs and cats time we can spare and space we can spare and love we can spare. And in return they give us their all. By: M. Facklam. Also remember: "Please have your dogs and cats spayed or neutered to help control the pet population." Bob Barker Donna P. Gates
