John McCain coming to Thomasville
By Jim Cox Editor & Publisher

McCain
Republican presidential candidate John McCain will visit Thomasville Monday, April 21. McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona, has more than enough delegates to be assured of the GOP nomination for president.

The agenda for the visit hasn't been finalized, Mayor Sheldon Day said Tuesday. Plans are for McCain to be in Thomasville most of the morning. He will speak to students at Thomasville High School and participate in a citizen roundtable discussion at Alabama Southern Community College.

Day said, "I am extremely proud and grateful that Senator McCain has chosen to come to Thomasville. He is somebody who cares enough about rural America to come and visit and listen to our citizens."

Day said he hoped that the visit could help the fall presidential campaign focus on issues that are important to rural America.

How did McCain get to Thomasville? Day said he invited him to speak at last fall's Rural Supplier Conference and initially it looked like he would but McCain's campaign had setbacks about that time and he had to cancel. After recovering and winning enough delegates to be assured of the nomination, the McCain campaign apparently remembered and this visit was set up.

McCain has visited the state several times and was in Demopolis with Gov. Bob Riley in 2006. Riley has been touted as a vice president running mate for McCain. but Riley says he isn't a candidate.

Day said he has had a lot of calls about the visit and he expects a lot of national press exposure for Thomas-ville and the region because of the visit.

McCain wil be in Birmingham that evening for fundraising events.
