Last day of qualifying brings some surprises Friday afternoon was busy with a lot of jockeying prior to the 5 p.m. deadline for candidates to qualify for the June 3 primaires. It was surprising who qualified and who didn't. Clarke County Commissioner Paul Bradford of Thomasville had been expected to qualify for re-election to represent District 2 but didn't. Rather his wife, Karen Bradford, qualified for the post, the only person to do so on the Democratic ticket. Paul Bradford is reportedly taking a job that will require him to be out of the county for extended periods of time. He currently works at Boise in Jackson. Reports are that Bradford contacted several people about running, including former Sheriff Jack Day who had planned to run before he found out that it would interfere with his sheriff's retirement benefits. Mrs. Bradford will face Republican Ladell Ott in the November general election. There was a surprise lastminute candidate for Clarke County revenue commissioner too. Terry Norris, an employee of the office who ran unsuccessfully for license commissioner a few years ago, qualified as a Democrat against her longtime co-worker and now boss Chris Beverly who was appointed to the position by Gov. Bob Riley last year. Beverly will seek a full term as a Republican, as the Republican Riley usually requires for appointees. Norris has taken a leave of absence until after the election. Woodie E. Pugh, a former Clarke County High School vocational agriculture teacher, qualified Friday afternoon for superintendent of education, challenging incumbent Gerald Stephens for the job on the Democratic ticket. Pugh now teaches in the Mississippi school system. Three candidates are running for the District 4 seat on the Clarke County Commission: Incumbent Joe Hunt and challengers Tyrone Moye and Teri Tidwell. Incumbent County Commissioner Rhondel Rhone has no opposition for re-election to his District 5 seat. License Commissioner Linda Goodman, a Democrat, got by without opposition in the Democratic Party but will face Republican challenger Jamie Wilkins in the November general election. Also qualifying without opposition were Clarke County school board members, Marty Parker, District 1; Charlie Anderson, District 2; and Clint Hawkins, District 5. Tommy Fuller, Washington County Democratic Party Executive Committee Chairman qualified Friday to run against Congressman Jo Bonner, a Mobile Republican, in the First Congressional District.
