Community Calendar Grove Hill's annual spring clean up will be Saturday, April 19 at 8:30 a.m. Anyone wanting to participate and pick up litter and trash should come to the Chamber of Commerce and get free trash bags. Water and refreshments will be provided to all participants. A dumpster will be located behind town hall for litter and trash disposal. The chamber will be giving away prizes to participating individuals and groups. Call the chamber if you would like to be assigned a road or area to help clean up or if you have any questions call 275-4188. SWAIA benefit The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will sponsor a Legal Defense Benefit Program Saturday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at Mt. Olive #2 M.B. Church located at 105 Griffin Street in Jackson. The purpose of this fund is to assist individuals to help defray the cost of legal services rendered. The special guest will be the Jackson Male Chorus, Rev. Clausell Boykin and sons and other invited groups or soloists as well as Rev. Kenneth Glasgow, founder of The Ordinary People Society. Strawberry Festival Final preparations are being made for the 22nd annual Castleberry Strawberry Festival Saturday, April 19 at 9 a.m. Arts and craft booths will dot the streets and there will be fresh strawberries for sale. Festival entertainment will begin at 9 a.m. with Faith and Haley Shipp of Castleberry, The Twin Creek Cloggers of Brewton, Just N Tyme of Andalusia, Emma Johnson, and Carl Tillery and friends, all of Evergreen, Perfect Image of Mobile at noon. Ole Time Fiddler's Convention The 31st Ole Time Fiddler's Convention will be Saturday, April 19 at 5 p.m. at the Old Frankville School. Special guests for the music show will be the Sullivan Family of St. Stephens. Tickets for adults will be $5 and students, $3. The day-long event will begin at 11 a.m. with barbecue pork and chicken plates and sandwiches. Plates will be sold for $7 and sandwiches, $2. The music show will begin at 5 p.m. featuring the Sullivan Family, (Margie and Enoch) of St. Stephens. The Fiddler's Convention Competition will begin at 6:45 p.m. Various Divisions for best fiddler, soloist, buck dancer, best band, vocal group, banjo, flat top guitar and mandolin will be featured. GH Memorial jewelry sale Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold a jewelry sale Thursday, April 24 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Friday, April 25 from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. GHAC photography contest slated Amateur photographers are preparing for the third annual photography contest and exhibition to be held in Grove Hill Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at the Clarke County Museum. "Photography In Your Own Back Yard," is an event sponsored by The Arts Council of Grove Hill and the Arts Council of Thomasville to promote an interest in art through photography. Categories for photographs are people, pets, scenes, wildlife and other. The featured special category for this year is Trees of Clarke County. There are divisions for middle school, high school and adult photographers. Submissions can be made at the public libraries in Grove Hill, Thomasville, and Jackson, at the Town Hall in Coffeeville and at the Chamber of Commerce in Grove Hill. The deadline for turning in entries is April 11. General rules may be found on The Grove Hill Arts Council website, www.grovehillartscouncil.com. This event is made possible by the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment of the Arts. Roberts-Cobb reunion The annual family reunion of the descendants and relatives of William Riley Roberts and Florence Almanza Cobb Roberts will be Saturday, April 26 at Witch Creek Baptist Church near Cambell beginning at 10 a.m. A covered dish meal will be served at noon. The honor class will be the Class of 1958. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and pay $2 at the registration table. Come and enjoy the fellowship, the food and the cheerleader-guided tours of the campus. (You do not have to be a graduate to attend.) Dunagan book signing at museum A book signing will take place Saturday, April 26 from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Clarke County Museum. Grove Hill native Ted Dunagan will sign copies of his recently reprinted book, "A Yellow Watermelon." Set in Clarke County, Dunagan's book, although fiction, is largely autobiographical. Eberlein reunion A reunion of all descendants of John M. and Anna Margarette (Eckstegen) Eberlein and also their daughter, Margarette Anna Eberlein and husband, Nathan Thomas Beverly, will be Saturday, April 26 at the Union Chapel Baptist Church on Alabama 69 in Clarke County at 10 a.m. The church is located four miles south of Coffeeville. Some of the related family names are: Fluker, Deas, Guy, Moseley, Bumpers, Reeves, Faile, Eberlein and Beverly. All related families and friends are welcomed. All are invited to bring a covered dish for lunch at noon. Family pictures and other family memorabilia would also be welcomed. There will be a time for sharing family news, etc. before lunch. Bertha Mae Health Fair Bertha Mae Chapter #314 Order of Eastern Star will have its annual Health Fair Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Jackson City Hall. There will be free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, hearing, speech, weight and more. Mini-seminars on Hopsice Care, nursing home, immunizations, nutrition, stress, etc. This is a free community health awareness program. Everyone is invited to come. Door prizes will be given. Church will be Sunday, April 27 at the First Baptist Church in Coffeeville at 11 a.m. Flowers will be placed in the church in memory of parents, George W. and Lizzie Janie Clanton and their children who are now deceased: Clyde B. Clanton, Glover James (Dub) Jr. and Bobbie G. Clanton. Only two of the children are still living, Darwin Clanton and Kathleen Clanton Dunagan. After church a covered dish lunch will be held at the home of Henry and Kathleen Dunagan. After lunch Mike and Patricia Smith and others will entertain with music. Added this year will be a "Silent Auction." Family members are asked to bring things they have from the "Old Days;" Example: Framed pictures, etc. Also homemade or bought items will be fine. Proceeds from the auction will first go to pay expenses: Any left over will go to the Nicaragua Mission Fund for the Mullinix family. All family members are encouraged to attend. Mathews cabin dedication set The public is invited to attend the dedication of the Josiah and Lucy Martin Mathews Cabin at the Clarke County Museum complex Sunday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow. Dr. David Mathews, a Clarke County native now head of the Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio will give a history of the cabin and the restoration process will be described by Clarke County Historical Society members. The two-pen log cabin was sold to the society in 2005 by Lucy Oliver Dortch and her son, Bill, and moved from its location off Mathews Cemetery Road south of Grove Hill to the museum. It was first built in the 1830s and occupied by Pioneer settlers Josiah and Lucy Mathews. In the event of rain, the dedication will take place at Grove Hill Town Hall.
