Verdicts in court trials: Guilty in murder case, not guilty in rape case
By Jim Cox Editor & Publisher

Juries found one man guilty of murder and another not guilty of rape in separate trials in Clarke County Circuit Court last week.

Thursday, a jury ruled that Trenton McLain was guilty of murdering Jamaury Whittaker at the "Chicken Coop" club in Gainestown in 2006.

McLain and Whittaker had had a fight a few weeks earlier and when McLain found Whittaker at the nightspot he retrieved a shotgun and shot him in the neck. Whittaker died of the injuries.

Wednesday, a jury decided that Alvon Portis was not guilty of first degree rape of a teenager who was 13 at the time of the incident.

Grove Hill attorney Darryl Drinkard successfully cast doubt on the girl's story and said that his client had never had any trouble with the law and was innocent of the allegations.
