Technology approved for T'ville civic center stage
By Arthur McLean Special to The Demorcat

The Thomasville City Council approved a lease-purchase agreement for the computerized lighting and rigging systems that will be used at the city's civic center.

The lease-purchase agreement is valued at $246,223 and will be paid out over the course of 84 months, said city attorney Edmon McKinley. The city has already paid $123,112 on the system to begin the installation process.

The system included stage lighting, sound equipment and the rigging necessary for moving stage curtains, backgrounds and props. Mayor Sheldon Day said the leasepurchase means the city will receive free updates to the control software as they are made available for the life of the agreement.

The city will be responsible for maintenance on the system, however.

Councilman Charles Allen said this was one part of $650,000 in civic center expenses that would not be paid with money from a bond issued by the city in 2007 for construction and renovation of the former Thomasville High School building downtown.

Day said the bond was never intended to pay the whole cost of the civic center work and that the local sales tax increases passed to pay for the bond were coming in at a rate that would pay the additional bills not covered by the bond.

When voted on, Allen voted against the agreement.

In other business, the council approved an alcohol sales license for Malts and Martini's at the Delmar Restaurant. Allen also voted no on the alcohol sales license.

Day praised city workers for their efforts in sprucing up Thomasville in advance of Sen. John McCain's visit last week. "They took a lot of pride in making our city look good for all our visitors."

He also reported that work on the Boys and Girls Club and Fire Station No. 2 on Old Hwy. 5 should begin soon.

The council also approved an increase in mileage reimbursement to city employees using their own vehicles for city business to the federal rate of 51.5 cents per mile.
