County school system wants to introduce ROTC program Officials with the Clarke County School System are working with an architect on renovating the old Clarke County High School library building for a new Technology Training Center. State Representative Marc Keahey recently awarded the system $250,000 for the center. The center will be used for tech training of teachers and staff as well as career tech activities, Superintendent Gerald Stephens told the Board of Education April 23. CCHS students will also have access to the center, and the building will also provide technology night classes for adults. In other action from the April 23 meeting, Stephens stressed the need for an ROTC program for county schools. "There continues to be an interest," he said. The system has never had an ROTC program. There had been discussions in the past with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army, however, there has not been an adequate building to house the program. A survey will be sent out to parents seeking interest in ROTC, Stephens said. "It will bring some discipline on our campuses." The superintendent said the armed service would have to provide an instructor who is familiar with working with high school students. • The following personnel actions were approved: retirements: Susan Burton, librarian at Clarke County High School; Pauline Robertson, Title 1 resource specialist; Betty Sumpter, special ed teacher; Ruby Lee Jones, Child Nutrition Program with Grove Hill Elementary; and James McLean, maintenance supervisor. Kim Bailey and Fortune Sheffield were approved for a continuation of Leave of Absence as they are working with state reading programs. With talk of reductions in state funding for fiscal year 2009 and reports that Mobile County will layoff 500 employees, the Clarke county system "will keep as many people working as we possibly can," Stephens said. "…Hopefully, we won't have to let any people go." • Stephens announced that Danny Chancey, counselor at Jackson High School, is working toward becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. He has been accepted under the program. • Bill and accounts paid for March totaled $437,224.26, and payroll totaled $2,101,384.92. • Groundbreaking will be May 1 for the new athletic complex at Jackson High School.
• The next board meeting will be at 4 p.m. on May 15.
