Benefit trail ride for Cole Hicks slated for May 17 A benefit trail ride for Cole Hicks, the son of Tiffany and Robert Hicks of Jackson, who nearly drowned more than a year ago, will be conducted at The Rocking B Ranch, owned by Tony & Rhonda Beck, Saturday, May 17. In addition to the trail ride, there will also be an auction at 5 p.m. and a barn dance at 8 p.m. Games and activities are planned for children attending. Cost per family for the day is $30 and $15 for individuals. This cost includes an evening meal. All proceeds will go to the Hicks family in support of Cole. Cole, who was 2 at the time of the incident, was pulled from a pool at a day care, March 8, 2007, by Jackson Police Officer Carey Slayton, who immediately administered CPR. A short time earlier, Alabama State Trooper Darrell Linder had arrived on the scene and had rescued John Thomas Atchison from the pool. Atchison, the son of Lori and Chip Atchison, who was not underwater as long as Cole, returned home about two weeks after the incident, but Cole remained critical for sometime after that. Following a 31-day stay at the University of South Alabama's Women and Children's Hospital in Mobile, he was recommended for treatment at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's (UAB) Children's Hospital and was placed under the care of Dr. Charles Law. Cole continues to receive therapy and has shown marked improvement during the past year, but his treatments and medical expenses have placed a financial strain on the Hicks family. Those who do not want to ride during the benefit event can help in other ways by donating auction items, making donations of cash, food or supplies or volunteering in some capacity. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.
