The West Bend/Bethel Volunteer Fire Department received April 18 a new First Response, Quick Attack truck for its fleet. The four-door four-wheel drive vehicle can carry 400 gallons of water. "It will be the first response truck for any and all calls we have," said Fire Chief Gary Counselman. "…It has all the necessary equipment on it that we need for any call that comes up."

The funding for the truck came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development. The VFD had been working on acquiring the truck for 14 months, the chief said. Counselman thanked the office of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby for helping get the ball rolling in the funding.

The station includes 22 firefighters and a chaplain. The department has been in existence since 1999. "We've come a long way in a short amount of time." The chief is proud of the department's ISO (Insurance Services Office) Public Protection Classification rating of 8.9. "We are in the process of lowering that grade," he said. "We just got surveyed (April 14)."

The department averages approximately 40 calls per year and has an automatic aid agreement with the Coffeeville VFD.
