Try brain food for your next meal
Your family will have to take care of all of your needs and you will just sit there like a vegetable not knowing if you're having (Which, I suppose, could be a blessing of sorts) Consequently, I've decided to start with the mental aspect of good health. I purchased the new book by Dr. Oz (the one who appears on Oprah) and studied the first lesson on caring for your mind. It seems that you can make simple adjustments to your diet to help begin the improvements. That's right, there really is such a thing as brain food. The best nutrients to help keep the cerebral power lines strong are the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish like salmon and mahi-mahi. ( I guess going to Emeril's that time helped me after all! ) We should eat 13 oz of fish a week. Walnuts are also very good for you as well as a variety of flavonoids found in dark chocolate made with at least 70 percent pure cocoa. Turmeric and curcumin found in Indian and curried foods are on the go list and mustard contains turmeric which can reduce the Apo E4 levels. These are (to make a very long story short) gunky things that coat your cranial wiring. Lycopene and quercetin found in tomatoes and leafy vegetables, blueberries, watermelon and red apples are good for you. And last but not least, resveratro, found in red wine is good for cleaning out your blood vessels that carry the blood supplies to the brain. However, unless you drink about 180 bottles a day, you may want to consider a high-dose purified supplement. Vegetables slow decline in mental capacity more than fruit so stock up on your favorites. And don't forget to laugh..... or at least learn how to tell a good joke. There's evidence that the ability to deliver the joke itself helps manipulate the brain waves. Here are a few recipes to help your mind.....Remember to try them!!!!! West Indian Curried Chicken 2T ground turmeric 1 T each, crushed dried chili flakes & cumin seeds 1/2 T each coriander seeds, ground cloves, ground ginger, garlic powder, yellow mustard seeds, ground black pepper, ground allspice, ground cinnamon 2 t salt 1/4 C veg oil 1 chicken cut into 8 pieces 2 C chopped onion 1 T minced garlic 2 tsp minced fresh ginger 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 C chicken broth 1 can unsweetened coconut milk 1 T light brown sugar 2 T finely chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 hot pepper In medium skillet combine turmeric, chili flakes, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cloves, ginger, garlic powder, mustard seeds, pepper, allspice and cinnamon and cook until spices are jsut beginning to smoke. Remove from heat and transfer to shallow plate and allow to cool completely. Process in coffee grinder or spice mill until finely ground. Reserve 6 T and transfer the rest to an air tight container and save for another purpose. Combine the chicken, 2 T curry powder, 1 tsp salt and 2 T vegetable oil; cover and set aside. In dutch oven heat remaining oil and cook chicken pieces utnil golden brown on all sides. Add onion, garlic, thyme, hot pepper and remaining 4 T curry powder. Cook about 4 minutes. Add broth, coconut milk and brown sugar and bring to simmer. Add remaining tsp salt and cook until chicken is falling away from bones (about 1 1/2 hour). Stir in cilantro and serve over a bed of hot cooked rice. Chocolate covered Walnuts 1 pkg dark chocolate melts 1 pkg walnut halves (shelled) Melt the dark chocolate over boiling water. Place walnut halves on a wax paper lined jelly roll pan. pour the melted chocolate over the walnut halves and let set; break apart when cooled. This will take care of two of the healthy foods you can eat to care for your brain. Smoked Salmon Sandwich 1 or 2 slices salmon (lock style smoked slices) 2 leaves cleaned lettuce 1 slice tomato mayo and mustard 2 slices whole grain bread toasted. While bread is hot, spread with mayo and mustard (it has turmeric). Add sliced tomato (it has lycopene) and lettuce (the darker the type the better). Place sliced lock style smoked salmon on the bed of lettuce(omega 3 fatty acids) and enjoy.
If I eat one of these a day, I should soon be able to remember my grandmother's three-digit telephone number from 1959. And it really doesn't taste too bad.!
