17,726 voters on list
By Jim Cox Editor & Publisher

About 12 percent of Clarke County adults aren't registered to vote based on a comparison of the number of registered county voters to U.S. Census figures.

Voters list in today's newspaper

A list of qualified Clarke County voters is in this week's newspaper. There are approximately 17,726 voters registered in the county and the figure includes active and inactive voters. Inactive voters are people who have not voted in recent election cycles. They are eligible to vote in the June 3 primaries but may be asked to update their registration.

U.S. Census figures estimated the county's total population at 27,248 in 2006. This figure indicates a 2.2 percent decline from the 2000 census.

Twenty-six percent, or 7,084, are estimated to be under the age of 18 and therefore unable to vote.

That leaves 20,164 adults over the age of 18. Subtracting the 17,726 registered voters on the rolls leaves 2,438, or about 12 percent of the adult population.

All of these 2,438 adults aren't eligible to vote because of felony convictions, mental deficiencies or other restrictions.

The Clarke County Board of Registrars details the voters it has registered based on race.

Black/white breakdown

There are 10,428 white voters, or 58.8 percent of the total, and 7,211 black voters, 40.6 percent. That's 99.4 percent. Other races represent the .6 percent balance.

Of the 900 inactive voters, the numbers are almost evenly divided between blacks (435) and whites (461).

The voters list in today's paper details voters in alphabetical order. Numbers after each name will refer voters to a frontpage chart to check their voting precinct.

Even if your name isn't on the list, you have until May 23 to register to vote and be eligible to participate in the June 3 primaries.

Citizens may register with the Board of Registrars at the office in the basement of the courthouse in Grove Hill.

Local races on ballot

Only two local races are on the June 3 ballot- one countywide and one district race. Interest had been lukewarm but appears to be increasing with less than three weeks left to campaign.

In the countywide race, incumbent Superintendent of Education Gerald Stephens is seeking a fifth term and is being challenged by Woodie Pugh, a longtime Clarke County High School ag teacher who is now retired and working in the Mississippi public school system as an administrator.

The District 4 Clarke County Commission race has drawn three contenders but it is limited to voters in that district, which includes a part of Jackson and the southern part of the county.

Incumbent Joe Hunt is being challenged by Tyrone Moye, Jackson funeral home director, and Teri Tidwell, owner of The Nail Studio in Jackson.

State races on ballot

State Democratic races include three vying for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination and the right to face incumbent Jeff Sessions in November. The candidates include State Rep. Vivian Davis Figures, Johnny Swanson III and Mark "No NCAA" Townsend.

Candidates are also running for nominations to serve on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals.

For Place 1, Steve Dodd and Clyde Jones are the candidates. For Place 2, Jeff Duffey, Jon Hayde and Aimee Cobb Smith are running.

There are no local races on the Republican ballot. There are candidates for four statewide offices.

Earl Mack Gavin is challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Sessions.

For Place 1 on the Court of Criminal Appeals, Peggy Givhan, Beth Kellum, Lucie McLemore and Teresa Bearden Petelos are candidates.

For the Place 2 seat on the Court of Criminal Appeals, Duncan Crow, Chris Mixon and Mary Windom are running.

Candidates running for the GOP nomination to be president of the Alabama Public Service Commission are Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, Matt Chancey and Jack Hornady.
