Kitten almost smothered to death in trash barrel
With an animal care and control center we could keep some of this from becoming a sad reality for other animals. Did you know that both dogs and cats can start to have litters of their own as young as four to five months of age? Cats have three litters per year and dogs two litters. Depending on the size of the dog you can see as many as 1- 12 per litter sometimes more. With cats they may have up to five. Cats can become pregnant while nursing the kittens she has at the time but, then so can a dog. This is why we need to spay or neuter our pets and be responsible pet parents. I've spoken with our veterinarians and they say that a good age for spay/neuter is between six to eight months of age, although they can be spayed as young as two months or two pounds. There are many benefits of spaying and neutering. There are no heat cycles, therefore males are not attracted and there is less desire to roam. It reduces the number of unwanted cats, kittens, dogs, puppies. And it helps dogs and cats to live a longer healthier life. Surveys indicate that 85 percent of all dogs hit by cars are unaltered. Intact male cats living outside have been shown to live on average less than two years. Cats are 45 times more prolific than a human being and dogs are 15 times more prolific as humans. They do not need our help to expand their numbers, but they do need our help to reduce their numbers until there are good homes for them all. Please do your part and be a responsible pet parent.
