Clarke Grand jury returns 324 indictments

The Clarke County Grand Jury issued 324 "true bills," or criminal indictments Aug. 8 after hearing a record 389 cases for consideration. This was the most cases ever presented in a single grand jury session. Of the true bills, 245 were felonies and 84 were misdemeanors. Several cases were continued until the next session.

Grand jurors, led by foreman Tony Sheffield, made several recommendations.

They suggested the air conditioning needed to be replaced in the Board of Registrars office in the basement of the courthouse. The office also needed repainting, new blinds and a board that covers a hole in the wall should be secured.

The Circuit Clerk's office needs hot water in the restrooms.

The air conditioning unit in the secretary's office of the Probation and Parole office needs replacing.

The banister in the stairwell of the District Attorney's office needs to be repaired and the railing in the stairwell tightened.

Computer monitors in the probate office need to be updated.

It was recommended that the unfinished portion of the new annex be completed and that an estimate on the work be obtained.

Grand jurors questioned a negative balance in the gas tax funds as shown on the audit they received.

The sheriff's office needs funding to purchase equipment such as new patrol cars, bullet proof vests and weapons.

Here are some of the 324 indictments recently returned by the Clarke County Grand Jury. An indictment is an accusation of guilt and does not necessarily mean that the individual is guilty of the charge of which he or she is accused. They will have an opportunity to defend themselves later in a court of law.
