Gene & Ellen's burgers rated among best in southwest Alabama

Grove Hill and Wagarville cheeseburgers made Mobile Press Register Food Editor David Holloway's list of "19 Burgers to eat before you die."

The Creekbank Restaurant's cheeseburger was deemed the best of all judged by Holloway in Wednesday's paper.

Here's Holloway's recap of his visit to Gene & Ellen's from Sunday's paper.

Every town ought to be required by statue to have at least one of these joints, a little walk-up stand that offers great cheeseburgers at affordable prices.

Gene & Ellen's Drive-In is smack-dab in the middle of downtown Grove Hill. You walk up to the window, tell the nice folks what you want and then go back and sit in the truck. When it's done, which doesn't take long, they wave at you, you pay and go on your way.

The burgers are of the big, old-fashioned variety—well appointed with lots of fresh veggies.

Journal Entry: "Wow, a big fat burger that is delicately crispy on the surface and juicy inside. And the bun was warm."

Walkout price: $2.17.

Gene & Ellen's may have been the best value of all judged. Other prices often included fries and a drink but ranged as high as $10 and $12! Even the Creekbank's plate was $7.64.

I live in Jacksonville, Florida and my son says Gene and Ellen's has the best burger he ever tasted. When we cam back home from a visit to Grove Hill, he even tried to duplicate the sauce they use....Gene & Ellen's, you ROCK !!
