He was born Nov. 23, 1926. He was a native of Suggsville. He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. He was a conductor for Southern Railways.
Survivors include two sons, Billy (Katie) Powell, John Powell, both of Selma; one daughter, Elizabeth Weaver, Selma; four brothers, Bobby Neal Powell, Walker Springs, DeVane (Mary) Powell, Birmingham, Royce (Martha Jo) Powell, Thomasville, Francis (San San) Powell, Grove Hill; two sisters, Shelby (Larry) Sullivan, Wagarville, Jane (Ray) Sheffield, Grove Hill; three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Powell, a brother, Henri Powell and son, Tommy Powell.
A visitation will be Thursday, (today), Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. at Lathan Funeral Home Chapel in Grove Hill with the Rev. Percy Clarke to officiate. Burial will be in the Whatley Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson will direct. (51-1tc)
