John Lucius Bell Sr., 95, of Chatom died April 21, 2009 in the Washington County Nursing Home.
He was born Sept. 28, 1913 in Edison, GA to John A. and Lillian Bell. He was one of five siblings. He was a member and deacon of Chatom Baptist Church for 50 years; a Mason, a Shriner; Chatom's first Town Marshall; first Water Board Superintendent and charter member of Chatom's Volunteer Fire Department. He worked for International Paper Company for 25 years retiring in 1975. He and his wife enjoyed many years of traveling together volunteering their time on mission trips and visiting the Holy Land.
Survivors include one sister, Ethel Bell Jones, Waycross, GA. He married Bernice "Sis" Hurst Bell in 1940 and they moved to her hometown of Chatom in 1949. Married 68 years, he is survived by his wife, Sis, son John L. "Chip" Bell (Patti), daughter, Penny (Glenn) McDaniel, three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
